I don't know what their religion is, or if it even is a religion. I think they maybe use religion as a cover. The ganados/cultists are mind controlled by the plaga which in turn is controlled by the master plaga. So it's essentially the plaga worshipping plaga through human hosts.

And the master plaga/Saddler seems to be worshipping power and wealth more than anything else.

I don't know but this is my impression.

Los Illuminados was created some time around the 18th century where they worshipped "Las Plagas" ("The Plagues"), a parasitic organism with the ability to control its hosts.

I'm pretty sure near the end of the game you find notes that say "we are going to finally cleanse the world" or something along those lines.I suspect they were based off the real world group called The Illuminati(well there are suspicions its real)an ancient religious group who worships owls and other creatures that effectively want to take over the world.I'm sure they've got some underlying religious belief thinking they are going to fix the world, with the working Plagus virus they finally got there chance.All those robes,symbols and churches can't be there for no reason.

But i cannot answer what there beliefs are could be anything mental.

Maybe it is religion, it depends on how we define religion. The zealots are not in control of their mind. Can they be religious then? Having a religion is not easy if someone else are in control of your mind. I'm not sure if it is a religion or not.

Anyways, to what extent are they mind controlled, I don't think its complete control, unless a higher up is directly telling them what to do. They seem to be somewhat autonomous. Able to make decisions on their own, ect...

I think the plagas just makes them really violent and not themselves anymore.

Aha, thanks for explaining LFF to me. And yeah, it kinda made sense.

The Los Illuminados are mind controlled through the parasite to the point where they have no fear for their life. That's at least how it appears to be.
